Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or even animal shelter. This is a great way to occupy your kids, teach them responsibility and also give them a bit healthier view of others who may be in need.  A local soup kitchen will allow kids and teens to help with meal prep, cleanup or serving meals.  If that is a little too, “real” for your kids (some aren’t always the safest or most savory places to be), you can see about letting them volunteer at an animal shelter.  They can help by cleaning out cages, playing with animals, etc. since animal shelters often have more pets come in during the cold season and need extra help.

Wrap gifts for friends and family. Wrapping gifts is a fun way to spend some time, and they can take pride in how they manage to wrap those oddly shaped gifts.  It’s a win-win for you since you can have them help you tackle some of those gifts for extended family.

Attend local holiday parades.  Many cities host their own local holiday parades.  These are tons of fun for kids and often include local businesses giving out candy or treats in the process!

Participate in local church holiday events.  Many churches have holiday programs, nativity scenes and fun caroling adventures your kids can participate in.  Check with your church, as well as other area local churches for great fun opportunities.

Play in the snow. If you live in a climate that has snow during the holidays, this is the best plan for holiday activities for kids this year.  Snow angels, snow forts, and snowball fights are all a ton of fun! Bundle the kids up and send them out to play!

Make homemade holiday ornaments.  Things like the classic applesauce ornaments, paper chains or even stringing popcorn for the tree are tons of fun for kids to make and cheap or free if you already have supplies on hand.

Let your kids decorate inside and outside.  Let them choose how the house is decorated for the holidays this year.  Give them the chance to add your yard decorations, holiday lights and put up the tree. (Under supervision for younger kids)

Visit Santa Clause at the local mall. This is, of course, the ultimate in holiday activities for kids this year. Every kid, young and old will want to visit Santa and give him their list this year!

Use these fun and free holiday activities for kids to keep yours occupied and happy during the holiday season this year!

Volunteering at a local soup kitchen or animal shelter is such a great idea! I usually volunteer at my local animal shelter twice a month but they definitely need the extra help during the holidays. It’s always a great idea to get kids involved with volunteer work at a young age <3
