How To Find Space When You Have A Small Closet

Spring cleaning is one of the tedious tasks that, regardless of whether you love or hate it, must be completed. For the last year, I’ve been on a mission to purge our entire house. Over the years, we have collected stuff. This stuff collects dust, sits untouched, and doesn’t bring any of us joy. During spring and fall cleaning, I spend extra time going through boxes—purging items and clothes.

Which brings us to my closet. I share our small closet space with Derrick, but it’s filled with 90% of my stuff. This has been a pretty big challenge in our small house, no closet space.

So, any storage space in our home holds a variety of items—even if they don’t necessarily belong there. Take our closet for an example; not only do we have most of my clothes in it but a ton of old bills, education papers, and just stuff.

There were several reasons why I wanted to tackle my closet this month.

  1. I can never find anything.
  2. I have clothes I have not worn in years but yet take up valuable space.
  3. I needed to have space in my closet for my iron, ironing board, and ironing spray.
  4. I was tired of looking at a cluttered space.

Tips on purging your closet

Let’s take a moment to talk about this Faultless® Premium Ironing Spray. My husband will be the first to tell you that I am not a huge fan of ironing, but I love that sharp and clean look that only happens when you use a premium ironing spray while ironing your clothes.

And now with a clean closet, not only can I iron my clothes and hang them up—I don’t have to worry about wrinkles. Ironing Spray gives my clothes a professional look without the dry cleaner price tag, and it’s a quality product. It is even used by dry cleaners, so you know you’re getting the same professional quality.

It doesn’t matter how much money you spend on an iron; the investment is in using a quality ironing spray. This is why I am loving the Faultless Premium.

Tips on ironing

While I don’t consider myself a fashionista, I do care about buying quality items and looking my best.

Tips on purging your closet

  • When it comes to purging clothes, here’s the rule of thumb I use. If I haven’t worn it in a year, it’s automatically gone. The exception may be one dress for a wedding or special occasion.
  • Take everything out of your closet, making a keep, toss, donate, and maybe pile. I put things that I haven’t worn in six months in the maybe pile.
  • After I have gone through the whole closet, I go back and look at the maybe pile. I think about those clothing items and asking myself I am going to wear this again. Unless it was a seasonal item, probably not, so it gets tossed into the donate pile.
  • Through this process, I realized I owned a lot of t-shirts—mostly grey.
  • Once I finished purging the closet, I decided to add some organizing products to help give my small closet a cleaner look.
  • When you only have so much room to work with, you really have to purge. At first, it’s hard letting go of so many items you love. But once you start to see how clean your closet looks, it’s worth it!

Isn’t this space a mess?

Working with a small closet

  • I highly recommend adding some organizing products that you can find at any retailer, including Walmart.
  • Using these types of products helped me to create more space within our small closet.
  • It’s vital to purge.
  • Put seasonal items away in a bin and store them at the bottom of the closet or in the garage.
  • When hanging your items up, try to color-code them. This will not only help you find your items more accessible, but it also makes your closet look cleaner.
  • If you’re a scarf person like myself, you can use a scarf rack or some wall bars to hang them up neatly.
  • Having shelves in your closet allows you to fold t-shirts, sweaters, and pants, versus them taking up valuable hanging space.

Decluttering was a huge part of finding space in our closet. I was also able to find space to have my iron and ironing board right in our bedroom, instead of having to drag it out of the laundry room every time I needed to use it.

And Faultless Premium has me excited about ironing. I mean, we all know ironing can be a chore—but the results are always worth it.
