Spring Cleaning Your Laundry Room

Woman doing the laundry in her home

It’s your laundry room. A room or nook in your home that is designed specifically for cleaning and nothing else. Yet, it can often be one of the most disorganized and dirtiest places in your home. Not only can the clutter and messiness get out of control, but it can actually be a fire hazard if neglected. That is why Spring cleaning your laundry room is so important.

Spring Cleaning Your Laundry Room

Start by de-cluttering. Throw out any mis-matched socks you have been holding onto, or use them as rags. Take anything that doesn’t belong in the laundry room and place in a container for sorting later. Toss bottles of cleaners that are past their expiration.

Decide how you want the space to be used. If it is just a space to do laundry, then keep bins handy to act as catchalls for things you find in pockets, junk that gets placed on top of machines and so on. When the bin is full, put things back. This will help keep your space from being taken over by clutter again. If you use your laundry area as storage as well, take some time to install organizational things like shelves, baskets, pantries, etc.

Have someone help you pull back your washer and dryer. Clean behind this area well. It is amazing how much dust and lint gets trapped here. This can be a fire hazard and needs to be cleaned out. Make sure to examine your hoses to check for any leaks or cracks. Replace them if need be.

Run a dry mop in this area to remove any dust and lint off the floor from where your machines sat.

Wipe down your machines. Using simple white distilled vinegar is a great option here as it doesn’t cost much and does a great job at removing crud, soap scum and hard water spots.

Starting with the dryer, clean out the lint trap and take your vacuum hose and vacuum the area the lint trap is in. Take a dryer sheet and wipe down the inside of your dryer to remove any leftover lint. You may be surprised at how much you still had in there!

To deep clean the insides of your washer, run a cup to a cup and a half of white distilled vinegar in a hot empty cycle (just the water and vinegar).

Re-stock your laundry room with new cleaning supplies if you need to.

I hung a fold-down drying rack on the wall and I love it. Takes up no space when not in use, and yet when I extend it, it can hold a whole load of delicates. Having a pleasant laundry room makes the task easier, right? I also have a radio in there so I listen while folding.
