Beat Boredom on a Budget: 5 Summer Activities You Can Enjoy for Free

YAY– it’s time to start thinking about SUMMER! We had a brutal winter here in Mid-Michigan, so I am ready for some fun in the Sun!


While some equate the sounds of the ice cream truck with summer, some equate the sounds of money flying out the window when it comes to summer time activities. Sure there is a lot to do during the summer months, but kid’s camps and activities can come at a steep cost. If you are looking for more frugal, or even free activities to enjoy with your family this summer, you have come to the right place. Below, you will find five of the best summer activities you can enjoy for free we could find!

5 Summer Activities You Can Enjoy for Free:

1. Budget bowling!
Tons of local bowling alleys run summer specials to get kids in the doors. In many cases, kids can bowl for free with an adult, or, can earn free games based on their end of the year report card. Call your local bowling center and see what freebies they might be offering for kids in your area. Bowling is great exercise, and you don’t need nice weather to enjoy it!

2. Look for make and take clinics.
Many local libraries and home improvement centers offer free summer clinics for kids where they can make and take a craft. The craft is usually based on an educational theme and tons of fun. Call your local home store or library and see what might be available. In many cases you will need to RSVP, so you want to be sure you get in on the action in time.

3. Find some free summer films.
Cinemark and AMC theaters both offer free films for kids during the summer. These are on a designated day and time each week so call ahead for specifics. You can also visit your local library for free movie rental on kids flicks, or see if your local movie rental shop offers free rentals for end of the year report cards. Either way, you are sure to catch a flick or two for free.

4. Find food freebies.
Take advantage of the kids eat free offers that many eateries often especially in the summer. Or, visit local festivals and city events that offer food freebies for kids and family. Food freebies are also available at eatery locations such as Krispy Kreme, McDonald’s, and more when you bring in an end of the year report card with good grades. Free food is out there, and in more places than you might think.

5. Find internet freebies and perks.
Want to earn a free book? Print out Barnes and Nobles summer reading log from their webpage. Follow the directions for use and cash in your log for a free kid’s book. Did your child get good grades or clean her room this week? Print one of the many reward certificates on ChuckECheese.com and trade it in for as many as 10 free tokens. While not an internet freebie, many 7-11 Stores are offering free slushies when kids color the free coloring sheet available. Many sites offer freebies for kids as incentives during the summer months, so be sure to do a little digging and see what you can come up with!

Find great snacks, activities, crafts, and more when you take advantage of these summer freebies for kids. They will love being able to beat boredom, and you will love how you still have cash left in your pocket at the end of the day.
