Halloween Treat: Monster Four Legged Cupcakes

If you’re looking for an EASY and last minute treat to take your to your kids’ Halloween party or you’re planning one of your own…. then this quick recipe is for you!

As a busy Mom of three, I don’t always have time to spend hours and hours perfecting the perfect dessert. I need something that’s quick and easy. And let’s not forget…affordable!

Making these Monster Four Legged Cupcakes will give you all of that:

  • It gives you the “cute and fun Halloween” factor.
  • It makes your treat original and fresh.
  • And it gives you affordability.

Here’s a picture of all the ingredients that I used for the Monster Four Legged Cupcakes. Yes.. folks it was made from a box cake with original butter cream frosting!

I came across this idea while browsing JoAnn’s a few days ago. I saw the little kit (Party City also carries them) for the Monster cupcakes. JoAnn’s has a sale where all Halloween Wilton products are 30% until the end of this month. Plus you can stack the sale price along with any coupons that will work on clearance/sale items. And if you’re a student or a teacher you can score an additional discount.

I also picked up a pack of food coloring which was also on sale 30% off. And a small carton of whipping cream.

All of the other ingredients I had at home, so I just shopped my pantry!

To make the Monster Four Legged Cupcake:

Follow the directions on the Betty Crocker box (or if you want an original cake batter recipe, you can check out the one for my Chocolate Cake) for the cupcake batter.

To make the Original Butter Cream Frosting:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, softened
  • 2 16-oz. boxes powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth. Add vanilla. Slowly beat in powdered sugar until desired consistency. Add a tablespoon or so of milk if icing is too thick.

Once the Frosting is made, add a few drops of purple food coloring. Continue to mix in a few drops at a time until you get the colored desired (or you would switch for a different color)

After that add the legs and eyes.

To get the spikes for the frosting, I used a Wilton Decorate Plus tool (this thing is awesome and makes decorating anything super easy!!)

I did put these in the freezer until the time of the party. I tested the little spikes with both the original cream cheese frosting and Betty Crocker frosting. The Cream Cheese frosting holds the spikes a little longer. If you’re making this for your child’s class, I suggest making it the night before and letting it freezer. It thaws out in about 10 minutes, so try to keep it as fresh as possible.

Or you could bring the cupcakes into the class and let the kids frost and decorate them!

Either way, this is a quick, easy and budget-friendly treat to make for Halloween next week!
