Knowing your health risks is super important, and I’m sharing reasons you should get a regular health check-up. I’ve lost a few of my favorite people to heart disease. Knowing your risk factors is the first step, and I’m sharing how you can get a free health assessment to find out if you’re at risk down below.

Reasons You Should Get a Regular Health Check-up

In the past, I have shared about my connection to heart disease. Knowing that my grandma, aunt, and my mom all passed away as a result of heart disease has made me very aware of my own health choices. That’s why I continually share here and raise awareness about heart disease.

If you aren’t sure about the risk factors, I have a solution for you. You can start by taking a health assessment. Beaumont offers this free service, asking you questions about age, lifestyle, family history, and other risk factors related to the development of heart health or breast cancer. Once you’ve taken the questionnaire, you’ll get a better understanding of what your risk factors are (if any) for developing heart disease or breast cancer.

Heart Health Assessment

If you have ever asked, “Is Heart Disease Hereditary”?

So many individuals think that heart disease and heart attacks only happen to those who eat unhealthily and don’t exercise. There are Surprising risk factors of heart disease. More of us should be asking about our family medical history. Heart disease is very commonly a hereditary disease that exhibits in otherwise healthy patients.

If you feel like you are healthy, but you know you have a family history of heart disease as I did, then you should be scheduling an annual health check-up. If a sibling, parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle has been diagnosed with heart disease, you need to make sure you are regularly tested. Simple things like an EKG, blood pressure check, or even an echocardiogram are easy to schedule with your physician. These can detect underlying issues otherwise undetected.

Reasons You Should Get a Regular Health Check-up

Are you living a healthy lifestyle?

While heart disease is hereditary in many instances, that doesn’t mean that is the only cause. Being overweight and living an unhealthy lifestyle is a considerable risk. There are many things that are considered unhealthy by cardiologists and physicians.

  • Is your BMI in the overweight or obese category?
  • Do you exercise regularly?
  • Are you eating a healthy balanced diet?
  • Do you have uncontrolled high blood pressure diagnosis?
  • Is your cholesterol borderline or high?
  • Are you a type 2 diabetic?

Reasons You Should Get a Regular Health Check-up

You have a history of cancer within your family tree

Not only is heart health important to me, but so is the need to watch for cancer. Specifically, my best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her diagnosis hit too close to home. We are still young women. I watched her fight for her life. I am thankful I was able to be there with her on this journey of finding out, crying, crying some more, then determining she was going to beat it.

{I’m thankful my best friend, a survivor is still here}

Having a family history of cancer, especially within two generations, is a huge risk factor. While we do not know all of the reasons individuals get cancer, there have been many studies that show a correlation between genetics and cancer. This is especially true in breast cancer and ovarian cancer diagnosis.

If you have a family history of breast cancer, especially on the maternal side, ask your doctor to test you for the BRACA gene. Most insurances will cover the cost of this genetic testing with a family cancer history.
