Loaded Chicken Tater Tots Recipe – Game Day Recipe

Need an impressive recipe to serve your guests during the big game? How about a twist on a classic homemade tater tot recipe with chicken?

Well, when you make our easy Loaded Chicken Tater Tots, you’ll be the talk of the town or at least the talk of your house! These little-loaded nuggets of joy will make your mouth smile a country mile wide, and I am sure you’ll be making more to maintain your coveted MVP status!

Talk about an extra point for delicious! They go great with an ice-cold Coca-Cola, so be sure you stockup before the big game!

Ingredients You Need

Sweet Potato and Russets – So I used a double variety of potatoes and let me just say trust the process. These two together will add the perfect sweet and savory component to your homemade tots.

Chicken – I reached for rotisserie chicken but any chicken that is shredded or chopped works. Just skip highly seasoned chicken as it will alter the flavor of the chicken tots.

Spices – I used a handful of spices and seasonings. This is going to create tons of layers of flavor so your tots can be eaten plain or paired with a dip.

Flour – Flour is needed to help bring all the ingredients together and hold shape. It also offers a nice texture to the tops.

Oil – We used canola oil but feel free to swap out with any of your favorite oils. I recommend not using olive oil as it is a stronger flavored oil and can overpower the tater tots.

Directions on making tater tots

  1. Grate the potatoes and place them evenly on a paper towel for about 20 minutes.
  2. Into a large mixing bowl add the potatoes, shredded Rotisserie chicken, all-purpose flour, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, chopped cilantro, sea salt, and freshly cracked black peppercorns.
  3. Mix gently until all of the ingredients are combined.
  4. Using a two-ounce ice cream scoop place the tater tot mixture into the palm of your hand and form it into a tater tot shape, make as many as the mixture allows.
  5. Set a medium-size skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil.
  6. When the oil is hot, place several loaded tater tots into the hot oil, do not crowd the skillet.
  7. Cook on all sides until golden brown, using a slotted spoon remove the finished tater tots and place them on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
  8. Serve with Pesto Ketchup.

Can I Leave The Chicken Out Of Tater Tots

You are more than welcome to leave out the chicken if you would like. We find adding in the shredded chicken adds incredible flavor and makes these a protein-filled tot.

I used two varieties of potatoes with this chicken to give these homemade tater tots incredible flavor. The crispy coating is incredible and dippable delicious.

How do you keep tater tots crispy?

The key to keeping a tater tot crispy is making sure you get them nice and crispy once they are pan-fried. Be careful that you don’t break the tater tots apart as you cook them.

Once the tots are done, remove them and place them on a paper towel-lined plate. Then you will allow them to cool and serve up warm. If you are going to batch cook, you can turn the oven to 225 degrees.

Place the tots in a single layer and heat them in the oven to keep warm as the rest of your chicken tots finish cooking.

How do I get the crispiest tater tots?

Spritzing the tots with a little oil half way through cooking and flipping the tots over will help to create a crispy texture on all sides of the tots when you bake in the oven.

The chicken is a leaner meat so it won’t have grease like hamburger would as it cooks, so using a cooking spray or spritzer will help to crisp your outside.

If you need also cook for an extra 5-10 minutes.

Are tater tots the same as potato croquettes?

Potato croquettes are made with egg, cheese, and mashed potatoes. Where tater tots are not full of cheese, but for this loaded tot you will find it is more than just shredded potatoes that get packed together. If you’re a fan of croquettes, try our Potato Salmon Croquettes Recipe.

Do you peel potatoes for making tater tots?

For this sweet potato and regular potato dish, you will find that peeling your potatoes first helps to remove some of the chew out of your tot. If you leave the skins on it will give the tots a lot more of a chewy texture. I recommend taking the time and peeling them pretty quickly.

Can you freeze the tater tots?

If you happen to not eat all your tots no worries. Just allow them to cool and then freeze for 2-3 months in a freezer friendly container. Then when you want to eat you can warm back up in the oven from frozen. Just heat until they are fully warmed up!
