I love good pumpkin butter!

FYI. Pumpkin spice anything puts me in an autumn state of mind.

And our Easy Pumpkin Butter recipe is giving all the Fall vibes.

It is a sweet combination with all the warm, comforting spices like cinnamon, cloves, allspice, ginger, and nutmeg.

I added cardamom because I went hard in the paint and also because I am a little bit extra.

But the extraness pays in the end because this pumpkin butter slaps the hardest of them all. No cap!

The verdict? Get into this fall favorite and know what it means to fall in love with the season all over again!

Easy Pumpkin Butter

An old maxim says, “Enginuity is the mother of all invention.”

True story, I went to the store to grab pumpkin butter, and there was none.

So, I Googled how to make pumpkin butter while in the store.

I purchased the ingredients and headed home.

I tinkered around with the recipe until I got it right.

Here are the results. Enjoy!

What You Will Need

Pumpkin Puree. When you buy a canned pumpkin at the grocery store, both pumpkin puree and 100% pure pumpkin are essentially the same. Don’t stress; grab one or the other and go with it!

Light Brown Sugar, Maple Syrup & Apple Cider. These three ingredients provide a lot of sweetness and a bit of complexity.

If you are worried about using light brown sugar with maple syrup, try one of these sweetener options:

  • stevia
  • agave syrup
  • demerara
  • coconut sugar
  • honey
  • turbinado sugar

Lemon Juice & Pure Vanilla Extract. The lemon juice adds acidity and brightens up the pumpkin butter, and the pure vanilla extract adds rich notes of vanilla; not unlike salt, vanilla helps the other flavors shine.

Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon & Cardamom. Here is where a lot of the flavor comes in, and is a beautiful mix. Pumpkin spice comprises warm spices like allspice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg.

Fun fact, if you do not have pumpkin pie spice on hand, use apple pie spice. Apple pie spice has many of the same flavors as pumpkin pie spice. I also added a little more cinnamon and loved cardamom’s zesty flavor.

Sea Salt. Salt, in general, brings out the best in a recipe, and here, salt helps to balance out the sweetness. But, instead of Kosher salt, we are using a finishing salt. We recommend Maldon sea salt.

How to make Pumpkin Butter

Ingredients:

  • 2 15-oz cans of 100% pure pumpkin or pumpkin purée
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup pure grade A maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider; I prefer unfiltered apple cider
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin spice or apple pie spice
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp of flaky sea salt

the wet ingredients for making pumpkin butter

The wet ingredients in 100% pure pumpkin, grade dark maple syrup, pure vanilla extract, apple cider, and freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Directions:

  1. Add the ingredients into a stock pot placed on the stovetop over med-high heat, and stir or whisk to combine.
  2. Allow the mixture to come to a bubble, then turn the heat low and allow the mixture to simmer. You want the combination to be at a slow bubble, not too high and not too low.
  3. Continue to simmer for 20 to 25 minutes. Note the longer it simmers, the more intense the flavors will become.
  4. Taste and adjust the flavor to your liking; you may want more sweetness, add a bit more light brown sugar or maple syrup. Maybe a little more depth of flavor, add a bit more pure vanilla extract or pumpkin pie spice.
  5. The result should be smooth and spreadable pumpkin butter.
  6. Spoon into ramekins for individual servings, or transfer into a larger bowl for easy dipping and scooping.
  7. Serve with crusty toasted bread, apple, and pear slices. This pumpkin butter would also pair well with Rum Citrus French Toast.
