This Homemade Peppermint Mocha Gift in a Jar is a great way to share a wonderful edible treat with friends and family this holiday season!
So easy and good!

Homemade Peppermint Mocha Gift In A Jar
I love a good cup of hot cocoa on a cold, dreary winter’s day. When we have a movie night at our house, we always include hot cups of homemade cocoa.
I’m sharing a recipe for making your own homemade peppermint mocha hot cocoa.
Additionally, you can consider this as a thoughtful gift idea for Christmas. {see my example in my date night gift basket idea}

We’re sharing two versions of this recipe below.
Depending on the size of the Mason jar glass you decide to use, one recipe is suitable for a smaller serving, and the second set of ingredients is for 10-12 servings.
Check out the recipe, try it, and come back and let me know what you think!
Ingredients for Peppermint Mocha (this is for a 16-oz jar)
- 1/2 Cup of Sugar
- 1/2 Cup of Peppermint Mocha Cocoa
- 1/4 Cup of Dry Milk
- 1/2 Cup of Chocolate Chunk Chips
- 1/2 Cup of Crushed Peppermint
- 1/2 Cup of small or mini Marshmallows
- a few pinches of kosher salt or sea salt for more flavor (optional)
(The above recipe is written for one jar. If you want to create additional jars, simply double the recipe or repeat the measurements for each jar.
Ingredients for Peppermint Mocha (this is for a one-quart jar)
- 1 Cup of Sugar
- 1 Cup of Peppermint Mocha Cocoa
- 1 Cup of Dry Milk (Note: only include dry milk if you plan to use water to make a cup of hot cocoa)
- 1/2 Cup of Chocolate Mini Chips
- 1/2 Cup of Crushed Peppermint
- 1/2 Cup of small or mini Marshmallows
- a few pinches of kosher salt or sea salt for more flavor (optional)
*This recipe is for a one-quart jar
This makes 10-12 servings.

Supplies needed for your Gift In A Jar:
- 16-oz Mason Jar or one-quart Mason Jar
- Christmas Ribbon or twine
- Assorted red & white or other festive color decorations
- One Red & White Pipe Cleaner
- Gift tags (you can make one or purchase from a craft store or home decor store)
- Written instructions
- Optional: assorted holiday decor to jazz up your jar
- Gift bag (if giving as a gift)
If you want to take this gift idea to the next level, add a holiday mug to the gift bag for the recipient.

Directions on how to assemble:
- Make sure your jar is clean.
- Add dry milk. Note: Leave out the dry milk if you prefer to use fresh milk instead of water when making a cup of hot cocoa.
- Add peppermint mocha cocoa.
- Next, add sugar.
- Then add the chocolate chunk chips or mini chips.
- Add your mini marshmallows. I picked up pink marshmallows from Trader Joe’s.
- Finally, add crushed peppermint.
- Seal with an airtight lid.
- Print or write out the directions and attach them to the jar with a ribbon.
Before placing the lid on top, tie the Christmas ribbon around the entrance of the jar, followed by the red & white pipe cleaner.
Before I tucked the ends of the pipe cleaner around the ribbon, I slipped on the gift tag and peppermint assortment.

Great gift idea!
And that’s it! A super easy homemade gift idea. It’s a great gift idea for friends from church, teachers at school, or coaches.
Since it is low-cost and easy to assemble, you can even get the kids involved in making this simple gift-in-a-jar idea!

To make an individual serving:
- When ready to use, mix the ingredients inside the jar.
- Place 2-3 tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix in a mug. Stir in 2 fl oz of hot water.
- Serve.
To serve the Peppermint Mocha Hot Chocolate:
- Simmer 1 cup of milk in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add 1/3 cup of the mix to the water. Be sure to mix the ingredients inside the jar before using.
- Serve while hot.
This makes 10 servings. Serving size: 1 mugful
Pro-tip: We prefer to use milk to make our hot cocoa vs water. You can tell the difference. If you make your hot cocoa this way, leave the dry milk out.
Then, when you’re making the peppermint mocha hot chocolate, use milk instead of water.
For an individual serving: Empty the contents of the jar into a bowl and stir until well combined.
Spoon 1/3 of the peppermint mocha mixture into a mug, stir in 3/4 cup of hot milk until the mix is dissolved.

After all that hard work, be sure to treat yourself to a cup!

I would love to use this idea for gifts for my family, as everyone loves peppermint mocha! How do you make the drink from these dry ingredients? How much water do you add? Also, how many cups does one jar make?
T Worthey says
Hi Katelyn! I’ve updated to add it- here ya go: To serve the Peppermint Mocha Hot Chocolate:
Simmer 2 cups of hot water or hot milk.
Empty all of the contents of the jar (with the exception of the marshmallows and the crushed peppermint candy) into the heated saucepan and stir until mixture has dissolved.
Serve. This makes 3-4 cups.
For an individual serving: Empty all of the contents of the jar into a bowl, stir to combine. Spoon 1/3 of the peppermint mocha mixture into a mug, stir in 3/4 cup of hot water or hot milk until the mix is dissolved.
