Frozen Blue Rose Mint Julep Mocktail Recipe

Happy Friday! We’ve made it through another busy week. This week the boys were in charge of making their own dinner. Two of them requested make-your-own-dinner night. Zayd’n decided to take it a step further and said he wanted it all week!

What Mother would turn this offer down? No cooking for a whole week? Yes, sign me up! {lol} It was quite interesting, to say the least. Zayd’n did really well by making a breakfast bacon sandwich, pizza rolls, cereal, salad, and a few other choices. One of the twins struggled coming up with cooking his own dinner.  However, this was a great learning experience for all of them. Overall, I think it went well, but I know they are glad to see Friday! Fridays are pizza night at our house. We will either order a pizza, make our own pizza, or have a frozen one.

Frozen Blue Rose Mint Julep

Zayd’n and I have been working on a few mocktail ideas for summer drinks. Since the Kentucky Derby was on last week, we decided to make a kid-friendly mocktail mint julep. This mint julep is sweet, of course, it is, it’s a mint julep! It also has the signature touch of mint and your kiddos will love making it! I promise! And don’t forget, this easy and refreshing recipe is not only great for kids, but it is also a cool summer drink for adults as well! Cheers!

When Zayd’n and his brother first tried it, their eyes lit up with a “WOW, Mom, this is GOOD!” Living in the house with a self-made mixologist, we always have a lot of ingredients on hand to make mocktails and cocktails.

What You Will Need To Make Our Kid-Friendly Blue Rose Mint Julep:

Ingredients:

  • 4 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 ounce of mint syrup (make your own mint simple syrup listed below)
  • 1 ounce of blue Curaรงao
  • ice
  • 1 oz of coconut water or a coconut infused with pineapple
  • 3.5 ounces of Rose Lemonade (regular lemonade will work as well)

*For a sweeter taste, we added 1 oz of  Virgin Pina Colada mix

Directions:

  1. Traditionally, mint juleps are made directly in a serving glass, but you can make them in a cocktail shaker or add all of the ingredients into a blender and pulse.
  2. Into a serving glass, add three to four (3-4) fresh mint leaves plus the mint syrup and muddle. Muddling the mint breaks the leaves apart releasing the oils that give mint juleps their signature taste.
  3. Fill the glass with crushed ice or pebble ice.
  4. Pour in blue Curaรงao, coconut water, and top with the Rose Lemonade, {if you are going for a sweeter taste, then add the 1 oz of Virgin Pina Colada mix}
  5. To mix, use a long-handle bar spoon and give the drink a stir.
  6. Garnish with a few fresh blueberries as garnish
  7. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint
  8. Serve!

What flavor is blue Curaรงao?

Blue Curacao is a sweet orange peel flavor. You would think by the color maybe coconut, but it is a fresh and sweet citrus flavor. It does offer a bit of a bitter twist to it. This is one of the most popular mixed drink add-ins!

What is a substitute for blue Curacao?

Triple sec is a very close swap in flavor for blue Curacao. You will find the Curacao has more of a bitter twist at the end but they are similar and can be interchanged when making drinks and cocktails.

Can I make this without crushed ice?

You can serve your mint julep mocktail over just plain ice, crushed ice, or with no ice. I find that the crushed ice is delicious, when you use the blender it is kind of like a sno-cone consistency.

What alcohol to add to this rose mint julep to make it a cocktail?

You can use a traditional bourbon whiskey, vodka, or even tequila for a twist. Add 1-2 ounces or add to taste your personal preference. We love these as a mocktail so the kids can enjoy them. But for us we like to dress them up from time to time for a little bit of a treat.

Variations to Recipe

  • Use a raspberry or pink lemonade
  • Swap Curacao with Triple Sec
  • Instead of coconut water swap with a carbonated water for a fizzy twist
  • Top with fresh raspberries, strawberries, etc.
  • Leave out the mint for a sweeter mocktail.
