Learn how to make homemade syrup with just a few simple ingredients.

You can make this syrup and drizzle it over waffles, pancakes, French toast, and more.

How To Make Homemade Syrup in glass bottle

If you have tried store-bought syrup, you might find it lacks a bit of flavor.

This homemade syrup is a simple and delicious way to dress up your breakfast.

Now, this is in no way a true real maple syrup.

But this homemade syrup will complement your breakfast nicely.

Ingredients Needed For Homemade Syrup

Brown Sugar and White Sugar. I find that using a mix of brown sugar and granulated sugar offers an incredible sweetness and buttery flavor to your syrup. The brown sugar will give the syrup a caramel flavor.

Vanilla Or Maple Extract. You can choose which extract you want to use. I love the vanilla, but sometimes we reach for maple, which gives a more nutty, rich flavor.

How to Make A Thicker Syrup

If you want to thicken your syrup, you will find that adding some corn syrup is an excellent base for this syrup.

You can add anywhere from 1/2 cup to a whole cup. Light or classic corn syrup will work great.

Storing Homemade Syrup

You can store this syrup in the fridge for up to a month.

Place in an airtight container and warm in the microwave or on the stovetop until it becomes a warm syrup. Only heat up what you plan to eat.

Storing your syrup in a mason jar works great, as the lid seals tightly.

Can I Add Other Flavoring To Syrup

To make a flavored syrup, you will either add fresh fruit and allow it to cook down or use an extract. If you use real fruit, you will need to run it through a cheesecloth strainer.

This method removes any fruit pieces. A fruit syrup flavored with real fruit will last for around two weeks.

How To Make Homemade Syrup

This recipe yields approximately 4 cups (32 ounces) of homemade syrup.

A surefire way to cut on certain items is to make them yourself.

I have one recipe for an item that almost everyone usesโ€”pancake syrup. Yup, and it’sit’sastraightforwarit’se. Think 2-2-2-. ThatThat’s

  • 2 cups OThaOThat’srups of Brown Sugar
  • 2 cups of White Sugar
  • 1/2 -1 teaspoon of vanilla or maple extract

Directions on making homemade syrup:

  1. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, and stir in 2 cups of Brown Sugar until it dissolves.
  2. Repeat the process with 2 cups of White Sugar.
  3. Add 1/2 -1 Teaspoon of vanilla or maple extract (or flavoring).

You can mix it up from batch to batch. Add cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, or a touch of ground cloves.

Additional Tips:

One of my favorites is Hazelnut flavoring. You can add just about anything else yummy that you like.

You can even add a bit of coffee or Rum for the adventurous types. You decide. Add 1/2 โ€“ 1 cup of Karo Corn Syrup for a thicker syrup, depending on the desired thickness.

You already know how expensive syrup is, so this is one way to save considerable time.

Instead of spending extra dollars on an item, you can make it at home. It’sIt’sck and costs less than store-bought syrup.

Also, this is an easy and fun recipe to make with the kids.

Can I can homemade syrup?

Prepare Jars: Sterilize your canning jars and lids by boiling them in water for at least 10 minutes. Keep them hot until ready to use.

Fill Jars: Carefully ladle the hot syrup into the sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace at the top.

Remove Air Bubbles: Gently tap the jars or use a non-metallic utensil to remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth.

Seal Jars: Place the lids on the jars and screw on the bands until they are fingertip tight.

Process Jars: Place the jars in a boiling water bath canner, ensuring they are covered by at least 1 inch of water. Process the jars for 10 minutes.

Cool and Store: Carefully remove the jars from the canner and place them on a towel to cool. Do not disturb the jars for 12-24 hours.

Check the seals to ensure they are adequately sealed. When pressed, the lids should not flex up and down.

Store the sealed jars in a cool, dark place. The syrup should last for up to a year.

    Hello!
Thank you for posting your recipe. We are planning on making little bottles of syrup as wedding favors for our January wedding.
If I put the syrup in plastic bottles with lids, how long will the syrup last? I’m asking because the bottles wouldn’t be sealed.
    Thank you!
