DIY No Sew Face Mask

We don’t all have N95 or surgical masks lying around, and it is imperative that what we do have is reserved for those on the frontlines- doctors, nurses, etc. If you have to go for food, medicine, or other necessary reasons, the CDC recommends that you wear a cloth face mask anytime that you must go out in public and observe the 6 ft distancing rule.

With masks being scarce, I came up with my version based on the CDC Guidelines and example that is four fabric layers thick and includes a coffee filter to reduce the spread even further. This face mask is free, easily adjustable, and washable. You may just need to purchase a pack of hair bands and coffee filters.

I recently shared an article where you can make your face mask with items around your house. Cotton Blend T-shirts and an Antimicrobial pillowcase are 68- 70% effective. Of course, getting your hands on a surgical mask is the best option, but if that is not available to you, then you can make a no-sew mask.

Cotton Blend T-Shirt. Yes, that new cotton-blend tee you got is 70% effective when it comes to viruses. Not bad, not bad at all.

Antimicrobial Pillowcase. This isn’t your everyday run of the mill pillowcase, an antimicrobial pillowcase is designed for folks with sensitive skin, and some brands may be better than others. Still, generally, they are 68% effective against viruses.  You can read the post to find other effective measures you can take when making your DIY face mask.

Here's what you will need to make a face mask.

Step-by-step instructions on making a face mask

Directions:

  1. Cut two layers of fabric into an 18″ x 8″ rectangle,  I used the bottom of a pillowcase, and I had one large rectangle when opened of 18″ x 16″.
  2. Fold your fabric into thirds by folding your bottom-up and folding the top downward.
  3. Slip a coffee filter folded in half into the center, under the folds.
  4. Slide a hair elastic onto either end about 5″ in on either side.
  5. Fold the ends toward the center and tuck one inside the other.
  6. Gather the mask at the elastics and pull them gently outward.
  7. The hair ties should loop comfortably over your ears; you may need to move them further in or out for a perfect fit.
  8. Remove paper filter before washing.

Be safe!
