Shamrock gumdrops recipe

Homemade Gum Drops – St. Patrick’s Day Treat

As a busy parent, I’m all about finding easy treats I can make for a holiday treat for the boys. And when my kids happily volunteer me to bring in a treat for a class party, I try to find something easy but a treat the whole class can enjoy. (hey, allergies!) This Shamrock gumdrop recipe has a few simple ingredients, and you can whip up in no time!

Since my Gumdrops for Valentine’s Day was a huge hit, I thought I would try the same concept for St. Patrick’s Day! So here’s an easy superduper simple, four ingredients or less St. Patrick’s Day treat! You control the ingredients, and you have a festive St. Patrick’s Day treat kids will go nuts for.

How to make a St. Patrick’s Day Treat, Homemade Gum Drops

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 2 boxes (3 oz) Lime Jello
  • 1 1/2 cups Applesauce
  • 2 envelopes Unflavored Gelatin {like Knox}

Shamrock cookie cutter

Equipment:

Shamrock Cookie Cutter

Directions:

  1. Grease 13×9 pan.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a pan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil for a minute.
  3. Pour into a prepared pan and refrigerate until set.
  4. Dust cutting board with sugar. Use a spatula to loosen sides and turn out onto the cutting board.
  5. Dust top of Jello with sugar.
  6. Use a shamrock-shaped cookie cutter to cut out gumdrops.
  7. Roll edges in extra sugar and set onto wax paper for 1 hour to dry out slightly.
  8. Store in an airtight container.

Enjoy! This will definitely be a HUGE hit in the classroom!

What are gumdrops made of?

Gelatin or Pectin-based gumdrops are what you will find often. The candy is then shaped and rolled in granulated sugar to help prevent the candy treats from sticking to each other.

What kind of flavoring should I use?

Since these are St. Patrick’s Day inspired, I went with green flavors. But feel free to use any flavor you want. Or you can do a mix of flavors if you prefer.

How to get shamrock shape?

For this recipe, I used a cookie cutter. You are welcome to make it into squares or do shamrock-style shapes if you would like to do that over a simple square. You can also make these gumdrops in a Silicone Mold like this one listed here.

How to make gumdrops sour?

If you want to add a bit of sour to these lime-flavored shamrock gummies, mix with some food-grade citric acid, and you roll in the sugar. It creates that sweet and sour flavor.

Homemade Gum Drops

Best way to store gumdrops?

These gumdrops need to be stored in an airtight container. You can store them in the fridge to help prevent them from losing their shape over time. Then nibble and enjoy a simple homemade gumdrop.

These homemade Shamrock-shaped gumdrops are not only great for a classroom treat, but you can make them for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration at home. Yes, you can make them in a silicone mold, just make sure it’s not a plastic one.
