Shamrock Shake Copycat Recipe

Oh my goodness– this Shamrock Shake Copycat Recipe is ah-mazing!

I love this time of year because it reminds me that I can score yummy Shamrock Shakes from McDonald’s!

If you don’t want to spend money on shakes every day, then here’s a fantastic Shamrock Shake Copycat recipe that you can use to make your shakes at home!

What is the Shamrock Shake flavor?

Something about this McD’s shake hits the spot. The Shamrock shake is a green mint-flavored shake.

Now, you can stay home and get the same flavor for a fraction of the price.

Ingredients Needed:

Vanilla Ice Cream. You can use any brand of ice cream you like, but I recommend a quality vanilla ice cream or vanilla bean ice cream, as it is the star of the milkshake.

Milk. Whole milk will give your milkshake that thick and rich flavor. If you want to lighten it up, you can definitely reach for skim or even 2%, but the flavor will be a little less.

Peppermint Extract. As you can see in this recipe, you want to add just one drop of peppermint extract. If you want a less minty shake, go for one drop, or add a bit extra mint, add two drops.

Mint extract is potent, so make sure not to do too much, or it will be overpowering.

Food Coloring. To get that classic Shamrock shake, you will need to add some green food coloring. It is optional, but it makes the shake fun!

Sprinkles and Whipped Cream. Want to dress up the shake? Add on some whipped topping and your favorite sprinkles! Then grab that straw and sip away.

How to Make A Thick Milkshake

One of the biggest secrets to making a thicker milkshake is using full-fat ice cream and a high milk-to-ice cream ratio.

Full-fat ice cream will be ultra-creamy in texture. Then add milk to blend smoothly, but don’t add too much, or it will thin it out.

You can easily adjust the consistency by adding more ice cream to thicken it and more milk to thin it out.

Create the perfect minty milkshake for you.

Ingredients needed to make a Shamrock Shame

Makes two servings

  • 2 cups of vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1-2 drops of peppermint extract (start with one drop – it is powerful)
  • 3-4 drops of green food coloring
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • green & white sprinkles (optional)

Directions on how to make a Shamrock Shake

  1. Combine the 2 cups of vanilla ice cream, milk, peppermint extract, and green food coloring in a blender.
  2. Blend until well mixed, but the mixture should still be thick like a milkshake. Do not over-blend.
  3.  Serve immediately.

Topping Ideas

A dollop of whipped cream and sprinkles are a few ways to enjoy this milkshake.

You could even crush up some mint Oreos or a drizzle of chocolate to elevate the flavor.

Another topping idea to give this an over-a-rainbow look is to add AirHeads Rainbow Candy.

Can I Made Extra Of This Milkshake

You can make as much or as little of this shamrock shake as you would like.

I wanted to give you the option to make a small batch. But all you have to do is double the recipe to the desired amount.

Can You Freeze Leftover Milkshake

If you don’t drink all your shakes, they can be frozen but will become hard, like ice cream in a container.

If you are okay with that, go right ahead and freeze the leftovers for 1-2 days, and then eat them!

You can let it thaw on the counter for a little while and then mix it up to help it regain that milkshake texture.

Love Shamrock shake copycats! Which is pretty hilarious considering I’ve never had an actual real life Shamrock shake lol! I do mine very similar, but with vanilla protein powder instead. It’s delicious 🙂 Happy early Saint Patrick’s Day, so glad to have found you over at Keeping it Simple tonight 🙂
