You may wonder, what is a mint julep?
A mint julep was originally a mixed cocktail, made with bourbon, sugar, water, crushed ice, and fresh mint. It started as a cuisine of the Southern states, specifically the Kentucky Derby.
But now, so many people enjoy a mint julep and have come up with their own twists on the traditional recipe.

Adjusting the flavor of this mocktail
So, like any drink, you might want to adjust the flavors. For more mint, add a bit more peppermint syrup. If you want a hint more, reach for more ginger ale.
Play around with the measurements and create a drink that fits precisely what you are looking for.
Just like any drink, it is versatile and can be customized to fit your taste bud preferences. Let me know the ratio you prefer when serving this easy mocktail.
Variations For Serving Mint Juleps
- Blend up to make a frozen drink instead of iced tea, then top with crushed peppermint candy.
- Add in a candy cane.
- Consider adding some fresh cranberries or even a few maraschino cherries.
- Add in some fresh mint leaves for a pop of green.
- Etc

Where To Get Peppermint Simple Syrup
If you head to the store, you can buy peppermint syrup in the coffee, cocktail, or drink area. It depends on your local store, but you can find it there.
You can buy a Starbucks one that is really delicious. If you don’t want to buy simple syrup, make it yourself.
Can These Juleps Be Made In Advance
I recommend making these as you plan to drink them. You will find that if you make the peppermint juleps in advance, the soda can go flat pretty fast, and the ice will melt and water down the drink.
Now, if you want to serve a crowd, make a large batch at once, then pour and serve! If you have some leftover drinks, you can store them in the fridge for a few hours.
The ginger ale will go flat in a handful of hours, but you can still drink it if you enjoy the flavor.
Alternative to Cranberry Ginger Ale
Sometimes you will find it hard to get a cranberry ginger ale at the store. If that is the case, you could reach for a cranberry Sprite, a classic ginger ale, or a plain lemon-lime soda.
Try adding some fresh or frozen cranberries for a pop of color and a touch of cranberry flavor!
