DIY Rae Dunn Mug Ideas Made With A Cricut
Christmas is just around the corner, which means I’m pulling out all of my Christmas mugs. Over the years, my mug collection has grown, thanks to Rae Dunn Pottery. But, it’s not fun when you can’t find your favorite mug in the store, thanks to other collectors, people upselling, and these being hot items! So, what’s a girl to do?
MAKE ALL THE THINGS! Yes, with a few tools, it’s easy to make your own inspired Rae Dunn mugs. Plus, when you pull your Cricut out to create these mugs, you can put any style and sayings on them. I’ve previously shared Cricut coffee mug projects; you can check out for additional ideas.
Today, I’m sharing how I created four inspired Rae Dunn Christmas mugs featuring some of my favorite sayings. We have Peppermint Everything, Noel Y’all, Santa; I know him, and Christmas Vacation.
What is the best Rae Dunn Font to use?
There’s quite a few free Rae Dunn inspired fonts to use, with one of the popular ones being The Skinny. You can download The Skinny Font here.
How to upload a font to your Cricut account
Depending on the type of computer (Mac/Windows), you can learn how to upload the font to your computer by reading this.
- Once you’ve downloaded the font to your computer, head over to Cricut Design Space and start a new project.
- On the left hand of the screen, click on the text icon.
- Then at the top of the template, click on the font menu. From there, click on system and search for The Skinny Font. If you installed it correctly on your computer or tablet, it should come up right away. Click on The Skinny Font.
Now you’re ready to get started on creating your DIY Coffee Mug using a Rae Dunn inspired font.
But, if you want a font that’s EVEN better than The Skinny Font, you can purchase one on Etsy, and this seller has one that is the CLOSEST I have found to the Rae Dunn font. This is the seller I purchased my Rae Dunn inspired font from– you can follow the same instructions as listed above to add it to your Cricut profile.
Here’s a list of the materials you will need to make your own Rae Dunn inspired mugs
- Cricut Explore Machine (I’m using the Explore Air)
- Cricut 12×12 StandardGrip Mat
- Cricut Tools Weeder
- Cricut Tools Scraper
- Vinyl in White
- Vinyl in Red
- Cricut Transfer Tape
- Coffee Mug
For the coffee mug, I am using Rae Dunn mugs flipped over. However, in a previous design, I used the Hearth & Hand line; they have the closest look to Magenta’s ceramic mug. You can order a few to try them out. You can see how I used it in a Sweater Weather DIY mug.
How to put the vinyl on the mug using transfer tape
The instructions are the same for each mug listed below; however, some specs are different, and I have shared each one under the specific mug.
- Peel the vinyl (keep it all intact) off the mat.
- Using the Weeder tool, carefully weed the word. This is where you need to be very careful, so take your time. Like seriously, take your time. I can’t tell you how many times I had to print the word out again because I messed up.
- Once you have completed this, carefully pull the front of the vinyl off. You want to make sure the letters stay on the back of the vinyl.
- After this step, take a piece of transfer tape and peel off the back of the tape. Take the front of the tape (the sticky part), and place it across the word. *tip- I cut the pieces of vinyl and tape down and took off the excess paper. This helped make it easier to work the transfer tape and vinyl.
- Press the vinyl onto the coffee mug, starting in the center and move outward.
- Peel the transfer tape away from the vinyl at a 45-degree angle.
- Line up the word on the mug and use a scraper (or credit card) to make sure the vinyl is stuck on.
- Remove the transfer tape.
Pro-tip: I try to use every single piece of transfer tape- don’t waste it!

How to make a Rae Dunn Christmas Mug – Christmas Vacation
And no Christmas is complete without the Christmas Vacation movie. My siblings and I quote lines from this movie all season long. If we never, ever watched this movie again, we know every line by heart! Here’s one we quote a lot, “Well, I don’t know about the cat, but I sure am enjoying it!” Do you know who said this line? LOL, One of our favorite characters! I’m taking the title of the movie to make this Rea Dunn mug.

How well does the vinyl hold up? Can you put the DIY mug in the dishwasher after putting the vinyl?
These are questions I get asked a lot after making a mug with vinyl. And here’s something I do. After putting the vinyl on the mug, I put in the oven on 350 for about 25-30 minutes. I also will use the outdoor vinyl as well- since it holds up longer. Between using this type of vinyl plus putting it in the oven, it holds. The Noel Y’all and Peppermint Everything mugs were made last year, and they are still holding up. I don’t recommend putting them in the dishwasher, but I have done it with no issues.
