I think anyone in the Western hemisphere has heard about Elf on the Shelf. This little guy’s fame has reached a cult-like following. There is literally Elf on the Shelf everything.  There is a 10-year old around here who still gets a kick out of trying to find him each morning. At ten, he is still a believer in Santa Claus, but the idea is constantly being undermined by his almost 13-year old twin brothers. But at heart, he enjoys the Christmas holiday season, and these cupcakes are for folks and kids like him who just want to spread some heartfelt Christmas cheer around and be joyful all year round.

Below you will find everything you need to make these delicious and chocolaty little wonders. Have fun, and we hope these Nutella cupcakes make a fine addition to your Christmas holiday traditions.

You may not be ready for the Nutella Butter Cream Frosting experience but let’s…
Ingredients:
  • 2 1/4 powdered sugar
  • 1 cup, plus 2 Tbsps unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups of Nutella, at room temperature, divided
  • 1/4 cup 36% heavy whipping cream
  • 1 1/2 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with the wire whisk attachment, add the powdered sugar and room temperature butter, butter should be softened but not melted into liquid.
  2. Turn on low and beat until combined, scrape down sides as needed. Whisk until stiff peaks form. The creamier the butter and powdered sugar mixture the smoother the frosting will be.
  3. Add 1 cup of the room temperature Nutella and cream together. Reserve the 1/2 cup for adding a Nutella base to each cupcake.
  4. Next add the pure vanilla extract and heavy whipping cream and continue to mix, again scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed using a rubber spatula. The result should be a pale chocolate frosting.
  5. Using a frosting knife spread about a 1 tbsp of regular Nutella to each cupcake.
  6. Next fill a frosting bag with the Nutella Frosting using a #2-star tip. Frost each cupcake and add Candy Snowflake Sprinkles and Elf on the Shelf decorations.
  7. Serve.
  8. Now who gets to eat the remaining frosting? It’s so good!
